So many things can be made from the beauty of wood, and wood comes in so many colors.  All of our products are presented with the natural color of the wood - no paint.  We also use only sustainable wood, some of it found locally.  Below are some of Rick's creations.

Clocks make an excellent wedding gift with the symbol of time being significant in longevity of the marriage.

Rick specializes in mixing different woods for his original designs.  Here is the current inventory of our products.  Click on a thumbnail to see a larger image.

The frames take some explanation.  They are unique, gorgeous and clever.  The frames are all 5 x 7, and one of the 4 sides is attached with strong magnets.  No more fumbling with the awkward clips on the backs of frames.  You pop off the frame bar on the front, slide your photo in with acrylic cover, and snap the piece back on.  Rick says it's almost as fast as the digital kind ;-)  They also come with an L-shaped base for displaying the picture the tall way or long way, and the base is also attached with magnets.  When placed the long way, you can also raise it to look like a pedistal.  You have to see them in person to believe it.  PATENT PENDING

This is what the back looks like:

Each frame is $53 including the wood base, acrylic sheet and instructions.  Buy a mirror tile for an additional $3.  Also, pictures are not included - you will have to provide your own.  If you really want ours, that is an additional $5.

These exquisite wall clocks are pieces of art.  They represent quilt-like patterns and are not surface laminates.  They are pieced as varieties of wood strips with constrasting natural colors.  These are the only three left in the collection, and the Bubinga one will be on display at the Thread Count exhibit at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen gallery in Lancaster, PA from May 1 - June 6, 2009.

When he started making clocks, Rick purchased a commercial clock face with painted numbers – he still hasn’t used it.  He designed a number of different techniques for showing clock segments including 12 separate pieces of wood.

The process of building a 12-segment clock starts with the selection of the woods to be used. There are a number of combinations that work well, but he’s always ready to try a new wood combination.  Once selected, the first steps in the process are making big wood into smaller wood, and then maybe back into bigger wood.  The back (and base for desk clocks) is made from a thicker piece of wood that may be smaller pieces laminated together to make the piece large enough. The face is made from thinner wood.

The construction of the face is the most complex part of one of these clocks.  After getting the wood to the right thickness, the individual segments need to be cut with a homemade jig that is calibrated to get a 30-degree segment.  Each segment must then be trimmed on both ends to get a hole in the middle for alignment and also to be exactly the same length with another homemade jig.  Once all of the pieces are ready, the pattern is selected for the individual pieces and the face pieces are glued to the back and clamped.

The resulting piece is trimmed to a 6-inch circle ready for the lathe.  The form of the face is cut in on the lathe.  For the round desk clocks, the base is also cut to match the form of the face. Initial sanding of the face is done on the lathe.  For desk clocks, the resulting piece is then drilled to fit another jig whose job is to line up the piece to cut a 15-degree angle on the base.

The back hole for the clock works is routered out using another jig, and face holes and back offsets are drilled for the bezel.  For desk clocks, the base holes are drilled for mounting pegs. Finishing involves sanding, sanding, coating, more sanding, more coating, more sanding, and polishing.  One final gluing step and the clock is ready for assembly with the works, hands, and bezel.
